with artists battling it out for a fantastic prize – a trip to participate in the ‘Air Brush Getaway’ in the United States. This is the highly regarded airbrushing extravaganza – where courses & seminars are held to display new techniques & technologies in the air brushing industry. With the stakes raised – the artworks produced were amazing.
The Sunrise Children’s Village is an organisation helping those who need it most in Cambodia – the orphaned children. Their projects include food & housing for abandoned children and providing them with education & skills to contribute back to their local communities for the future. Children come to them in a myriad of ways: parents have been killed or maimed by land-mines, died of hunger or disease and often murdered because of their political affiliations. When these children are rendered homeless, more often than not, they are taken into homes and used as slave-labour in return for food and a place to sleep until their plight is brought to the organisations attention.
Founded by Geraldine Cox, her career started with the Australian Department of Foreign Affairs in 1970. Her first posting was to Phnom Penh, where she experienced life in a country at war when the Vietnam War spilled over into Cambodia. Geraldine’s original experiences in Cambodia never left her and on a return visit in 1993, she became involved in helping an orphaned Cambodian child. From that small beginning Geraldine founded what is now the Sunrise Children’s Village.
“The concept of this event is to raise funds for the Sunrise Children’s Village - in a fun way and to help raise the profile of our extremely talented Australian Air Brushers at the same time. We are really proud to be able to contribute to helping out children who have been left orphaned and abandoned.”

Winner – 2008 Australian Air Brushers Charity Spray Off
Scotts board simply wowed all the judges with his outstanding board. Not only was the quality of his finish of the highest level – but Scott really put a lot of thought into his theme.
With the work being named ‘New Beginning’ the board features one of the orphans, Soriya ('Sun'). The portrait of little Soriya used only solid basecoat colours which give her an unyielding photorealism against all the other effects.
The use of Kolor in Scotts work was fantastic using no less than 68 different House of Kolor products. The 'sunrise' top of the board was created using a tangerine to lime gold kandy blend over abalone flake & white ice pearl. Native Cambodian writing across the top meaning ‘New Beginning’ was created using snow white and silver pearl under the tangerine to lime gold kandy blend.
The lower tribal graphic featured on the board was based with the largest silver flake in the HOK range. Depth was created through a staggered unmasking technique between the blend of violet, magenta and hot pink kandy coats.
The bottom of the board features a Lotus flower painted using designer pearl base coats exclusively to achieve a contrasting satin shimmer which lifts it off the random sparkle of the flake. The symbolic Lotus flower holds deep meaning for many cultures in its native country of Cambodia. Mirroring the life of a 'rescued' orphan, its life begins at the bottom of dark, stagnant waters. With its yearning for growth towards the nurturing sunlight, the bloom can raise its head above water. Once there, the Lotus flower reveals its potential in a beautiful bloom.
"From before I could walk or even talk, I've applied art to anything that could take it. Most people who cross my path end up with some form my art on, in, or around them – it’s contagious, and I’m always up for a challenge. I will paint anything, anywhere, from the dankness of London to the tropics of Singapore; I’ve been, seen and sprayed. Australia however is where my favourite air-brush hangs, and alongside it, photos of all the awesome people I’ve met on the way."

Cristians motivation behind this work is to create awareness for the Sunrise Children's charity. Being his own design, Cristian has weaved many symbolic pieces into the piece. The doves symbolic meaning of peace and the wish to bring it to the Cambodian people. The blocked areas of colour represent the hues of the Cambodian flag. The border below the dove is the outline shape of the Cambodia. A ruin temple in background links the troublesome history of the country.
However the most striking feature of the board is the amazing photorealism that Cristian is able to achieve. His technique of airbrush illustration is world renown. Any viewer of this piece will always get close to the board to double check if it is a printed graphic. As a testament to his skill, they are always astounded by the photographic detail that Cristian is able to achieve.
Using mostly solid colour, hints of kandy were added around temple and in the midnight sky. This small palette of product shows that even the most breath taking works of art can be created from the simplest of products.
Cristian has been airbrushing since 2001, he quickly developed his skills through the school of Airbrush Venturi. Cristian’s passion towards airbrushing has won him numerous top level awards as he opened up the first Airbrush Venturi school in NSW.
Cristian’s commitment towards educating and exposing airbrushing has made him highly respected and considered one of the most talented artists in the country.

Adrian is a guy with one hell of a heart. Wanting to work his craft air brushing into a charity of some form for many years – this competition had to have Adrian involved.
A lot of thought went into creating a design that would be both commercial and raise awareness for the charity. The aspect of Sunrise Children's Village that struck Adrian, was the helping hand that they offer to disadvantaged children. This created the theme that formed Adrian's industrial design angel helping those form the murky depths. By keeping the style of the piece custom culture with industrial chrome effects, Tru-fire and tribal graphics, Adrian hopes the board will be popular at auction. “I really just wanted to raise as much money for the charity as possible!”
Lime Gold Kandy base coat gives the board ultimate vibrancy. Tangelo and Ultra Orange Pearl were used in the flame graphic with Passion Purple Pearl on edged pinstripe. Fine Gold Flake was then laid over the top of the graphic to create ultimate shimmer.
Base coat black & white were used to create the industrial looking angel. Adrian's use of such a simple product to create a real look metal effect shows the depth of his talent. Tru-fire flame was created using Kandy Concentrates in Organic Green and Spanish Green. Six layers of detail to create the realistic depth of the flames.

Stepping away from familiar and traditional airbrush techniques, Simons oriental influenced piece captures the beauty of the eastern woman. Approaching the board as an experimental piece, the simplistic artwork used the House of Kolor product to their maximum effect.
Starting with a gloss black base, Simon built a mystic effect with Fine Platinum Metajuls as a overlay into the background. Then with a mixture of Cobalt Blue & Magenta Kandys the striking violet colour was added. Silver-White Marblizer was used on the background & hair to create texture & depth.
The technique that added real luxury to Simons work was the gold leafing. Applied to the board with brush & then adding drop shadows to the graphic edges to create depth. Gold leafed graphic edges were defined with detail pin striping.
The woman's outfit is created using Mirror Reflective Kosmic Krome. Again experimenting with new techniques, Simon used Scotch pad & prep pen to scratch back the Aluminum overlay to expose the black base. This depth was then overlaid with lace pattern in Aluminum to create the real life texture effect
Simon has applied his artwork to almost every conceivable canvas, from automotive to fine art and everything in between. Simon believes that airbrushing isn’t just about photo reproduction - although it’s a very impressive skill to have, it is also important to have great design skills and create a healthy combination of airbrushing, graphics and special effects.
With many hours of hard work and real enthusiasm, Simon has been able to see the industry grow and grow with it.

In a hope to raise as much money for the Sunrise Children's Villages charity at auction, Andrew kept the theme of his board surf orientated. Ocean inspired multi layered graphics form a background for the sexy beach babe. The back of the board features retro surf theme – ‘Endless Summer’ with Andrews own twist.
The ocean graphics are a Shimrin Graphic Kolor blend of Marine Blue, Lemon Yellow & White to achieve the unique ‘seafoam’ colour. This was mixed in varying shades to achieve a gentle fade from top to bottom. Then laid over the whole blue graphic area was Aquarius Kameleon Pearl. Free hand airbrushed beach babe is completed in all solid mixed colours. Multiple layer masking was used to create clean hard edged graphics with strong colour contrasts.
Andrew Kennedy has a background in graphic design and a love of all things fast, constantly working with the latest air brushing styles, trends and techniques.
Andrews work has won numerous awards, both nationally and internationally, including ‘Top Graphics’ at Summernats 2004 in street class, ‘Best Overall’ at the Air-Brush Adrenaline Air-Brush Awards at Motor Ex (judged by Craig Fraser) 2004, and multiple awards at the Australian Air-Brush Awards in various years including first placing – to name a few.

Being a fan of the automotive custom culture of the 1950’s, Matt's board was inspired by the Hot Rod world. In an era when flame graphics rose to prominence & pin striping your street racer was all the rage – an ever lasting love of the hot rod culture was born for many worldwide.
The base coat used was KO SEAL Matt black. This finish is ever popular in the custom culture to this day. The graphic flames were initially laid down in Silver Flake – the largest size flake that HOK offers. A vibrant blend of Kandys were then overlaid to create a rainbow of psycodellic colour. Starting with Lime Gold into Organic Green, then Oriental Blue into Violette and lastly Pink.
A maze of pin striping intertwining with the flames completes the piece. White & Gold Urethane Enamels were used to highlight the edges of the flames graphics, along with the highly detailed pin striping.
Mat has been airbrushing professionally for 10 years under his business ‘Extreme Designs’. Initially trained in sign writing , Mats love of all things custom lead him to the world of airbrushing & pin striping. Hot rods & custom choppers are his usual canvas. Mat operates his business from Thomastown in Victoria, Australia, though has travelled to the US to complete custom work there also. www.extremedesigns.com.au

Joes signature style is his skeletons – so it was really no surprise to see them featured on his board. The sun and moon on the top of the board represent the Chinese Yin Yang concept. The lightness of Yang, the sun is represented in the warm gradual colours blended around the edge of the board. The turbulent darkness of Yin, the moon towers over the ghoulish skeleton in the centre graphic.
Orion Silver with Metajuls were laid under gradient blend of Kandys. Pagan Gold, Tangerine, Apple Red and Burgundy Kandys were all used to create a smooth blend of colour. Background of the central graphic was a Kandy blend of Oriental Blue, Cobalt Blue and Burple. Mural work was completed in mixes of Graphic Kolors. Graphic border is filled with Black Diamond Flake with edge pin striping in Magenta.
Professionally airbrushing for 7 years, Joe bought his first airbrush when he was only 13. Now running his own business full time, Bad Image Custom Paint.
His artistry has been featured in every Australian bike & car magazine. Most prestigious show winners feature some of Joes work, with over 100 awards for paintwork – both airbrush & full respray. Joes work has taken him overseas to complete custom spray work & airbrushing for vehicles of royalty.

Ryan bears his artistic roots in the deep dark underworld – so it wasn’t too surprising to see the grim reaper on his board. With a death list in hand featuring the other competing artists, Ryan's playful take on the dark subject matter was a real crowd pleaser.
The playful use of colour lifts the dark mood of the board. Silver Metajul base was laid down on the board first. The grim reaper shape was next added in black, to outline the dimension & contrasts. Then a variety of mixed Kandys were overlaid to achieve a beautiful myriad of sombre colours.
The skeletal boarder on the piece adds a great dimension to the board. Its raised edges are one of those happy accidents that most artists stumble across. When the mask tore most of the finished boarder off – a last minute fix created a raised textured surface to the bones that makes then pop off the board. The bones were created with a off white basecoat. Then with transparent brown Kandy mixed with black the detail was added.
Ryan's trademark horror style & freaky subjects have been developed over the past 6 years of airbrushing. Ryan works full time in his business ‘Twisted Arts Factory’ with co-owner Chris Edwards. Their studio focuses on airbrushing mainly murals and fine art which is earning them a reputation for their attention to detail. These talented guys have many other side projects also including illustration and photography.

The bright contrasting colours of this board make it a real eye catcher. In reference to the Sunrise Children's Village charity, Stewart wanted to use the symbolic Koi carp. Koi means "love, affection" and therefore symbols of love and friendship in Japan. The waves surrounding the Koi carp also have ancient Japanese importance. Taking his inspiration from The Great Wave off Kanagawa, a famous woodblock print by Japanese artist Hokusai in 1832. The curled fingers of the wave create a beautiful depth surrounding the Koi carp.
Snow White Shimrin Designer Pearl was used as base coat with White Ice Dry Pearl to add extra shimmer. Application tape was laid over the entire board with the free hand design sketched on. Then the wave shapes were cut out and the dark shadows added first. Oriental Blue Kandy Koncentrate was used to add detail to the waves. The Koi shape was laid down in Pagan Gold Kandy then Tangerine Kandy was added to high light the scale detail. Then with solid black – outline detail added to the scales for depth. Flowers were created using Hot Pink Shimrin Designer Pearl with Passion Purple Pearl also added for detail. Solid White was added lastly to highlight areas, making the final design pop off the board.
Stuart founded Ultimate Airbrush in 1993 now residing on the Gold Coast of Australia. During the past 15 years he has been commissioned for works such as Airplane Nose Art on Vintage War Birds, Wall Murals in Celebrities Homes, Special Effects Make-up for the Movie Industry and countless other projects. His specialty and passion lies in creating one of a kind eye catching custom paint work for cars, boats and motorcycles.

Wayne's motivation in this piece was to create impact using new effects & techniques. The opportunity to apply a variety of House of Kolor products instead of just a limited few really inspired Wayne to test out a variety of his skills. With a combination of illustration, graphics, overlays and pin striping – this board certainly packs some punch.
The tribal graphics were created using Pagan Gold and Tangerine Kandys over Silver Flake. Intertwining the graphics are free hand airbrushed teeth in solid white base coat with aged details added with transparent tinters.
The board features an airbrushed illustration of a stunning busty beauty. Sun bleached highlights in her hair are so realistic you feel like you could touch it.
Wayne Harrison has been airbrushing for over 30 years, with his artworks winning awards in USA and Australia. Also his artwork has received a lot of awards for Top Graphics and Air Brush Art (Murals) throughout the automotive shows around Australia e.g. Auto Salon, Motor Ex and many others.

Striking a key with the most extreme of the surfing fraternity is the board aptly named ‘Wax Freaks’. Lou’s inspiration was the wave riders battle with the wave in their pursuit to ride even the meanest of waves. Each skeleton is in the position of the riders feet. The rider is fighting the demons in attempt to control the board & the direction the wave will take them. The chains represent the riders continual attachment to the board & wave.
This board is unique in that it is a matt finish. Flat black was used on the base with the final clear coat including a flattening agent. Lou created a ‘fatigue’ look on the scroll banners using gold lettering enamel.
Translucent white & black were used to create the skeletons ghostly look. Mixing the product to spray translucently meant detailing had to be spot on the first attempt. Detail was ever carefully added at close proximity to the board. This ghostly appearance only adds to the darkness of the piece.

Having a tendency to paint dragons, Lynette wanted to try sea dragons for her surfboard. These three scary creatures are rearing their menacing heads from the watery depths. Imagine what a surfer would feel when looking at their feet whilst on this board! Their realistic detailing is almost disturbing – with razor sharp teeth dripping saliva.
Ground layer was completed using Shimrin Designer Pearl base coat in various shades including Violet, Light Teal, Passion & Magenta. Top layers of colour include Turquoise Dry Pearl & Ice Violet Ice Pearl with Kamen Blue Kameleon Flake.
Sea dragons are all completed in mixed Graphic Kolors. Realistic flames are created in Kandy Koncentrates Oriental Blue & Cobalt Blue.
From as early as six Lynette Orzlowski had the insight to realize that she had paint running through her veins. A humorous take on Elvis the ‘King’ in Tiki themed wood grain finish. Wood grain being a popular finish on many items in the 1960’s, its popularity spread into both the auto & surfing cultures. Again crossing the cultures in the present day, Pete’s playful approach to the design makes it a popular and eye catching board.
Starting with Sunset Pearl Shimrin Designer Pearl as a base coat, Kandys were then overlaid. Tangerine to Lime Gold Kandy blend gives the warming sunset appeal with Lemon Yellow pin striping outline. Wood grain finish was created from a combination of black mixed with Lime & Spanish Gold Kandys in varying strengths to create realistic look.
Pete has been airbrushing professionally for the past 5 years under his business One Way Designs. Having trained in graphic design & fine arts, Pete has found himself returning to these skills. Currently focusing his work in the fine arts, with airbrushing as one medium of choice. Pete's signature styling is inspired by customised hot rods and tiki themes.
